When does a Walk become a Hike?

A walk is an activity generally accessible to all fitness levels and a broad range of age groups. There is a bit of an overlap between the two, but we can all appreciate that a summer walk through the English countryside and hiking up a trail into a mountain range are related yet separate things.

There are some exceptions to this rule though, and some trips combine both. For instance, I walked the first part of the West Highland Way, but I was definitely hiking once I hit the Scottish Highlands.

Hiking generally refers to rougher terrain, steeper paths, and less defined routes. It can also include single-day or multi-day treks.
